Chapter 4:
Playing House (4)
*
Could it be that the previous rules were hinting that Mommy could fight against Daddy, and that she had to please Mommy to protect herself?
Mo Bai poked Mommy's body with her metal club. Unfortunately, she had struck too decisively. Mommy has no chance of survival.
Things were starting to get troublesome.
But it was fine. She had already awakened a supernatural ability, and there were two days left to prepare. That was enough to put up a fight.
She needed to use these two days to gather as many clues as possible and devise a solid plan to deal with Daddy.
Mo Bai used her club to search through Mommy's body and found a cellphone in her pocket.
Since Mommy could contact her and even post on social media, it made sense for her to have a smartphone.
Mo Bai couldn't bend down easily, but she had a grabber tool hanging on the wall. It was something like the ones used by street cleaners, which she used to pick things up without bending.
She grabbed the picker, picked up Mommy's phone, and held it up to the woman's mangled face, trying to unlock it with facial recognition.
Her luck wasn't bad. Even though Mommy's face was almost unrecognizable, the phone still unlocked successfully.
The phone only had a few apps: a chat app, a photo gallery, and a notes app.
There were only two contacts on the chats. One was Daughter, which was her, and the chat history matched what was on her own phone. The other was Husband, but that chat was empty.
The gallery contained photos of badly cooked dishes, selfies, and some videos.
Mo Bai randomly clicked on one of the videos and immediately heard a sharp and shrill scream.
In the video, Mommy was savagely biting into a massive monster that was more than two meters tall. The creature punched half of Mommy's face off, knocking one of her eyeballs loose, causing it to dangle from her socket.
So that was how Mommy's missing eyeball had been knocked out.
But Mommy wasn't weak either. She clawed at the monster's chest, ripping it open and exposing a blackish-red heart and cracked ribs.
However, within just three seconds, the wounds healed before her eyes.
All the videos showed Mommy fighting that monster. One of them was a tearful selfie where she complained that her husband always hit her.
Mo Bai: "…"
That monster in the video… was probably Daddy, right?
It seemed that Daddy and Mommy's marriage was anything but harmonious.
Mo Bai awkwardly looked down at her metal club. Judging from Daddy's strength in the video, the club wouldn't do much damage to him, and even if she managed to hurt him, it would heal right away.
Did Daddy have any weaknesses at all?
Maybe Mommy, who had also tried to kill Daddy, knew his weak spot.
Clinging to that small hope, Mo Bai opened the Notes app. The content read:
[How to Get Rid of My Husband?
Known facts:
My husband likes to drink. After drinking, he becomes violent.
His entire body can heal, except for his heart.
When there are two people in front of him, he always attacks the weaker one first.
Conclusion: I need a child to act as a shield against him. I'll soon have a child. I hope she'll be weak, obedient, and pretty.]
Mo Bai: "…"
Well… that actually made sense.
No wonder Mommy, who had no emotional bond with her, tried to feed her rotting, poisonous food and constantly lost her temper like a self-centered monster. It was never about motherly love. The root cause was this plan!
Mommy and Daddy were both monsters in this extreme survival game. They'd always been enemies, unable to kill each other because both had ways to stay alive.
Then Mo Bai's arrival had tipped their balance and stirred up their conflict.
Just as she was thinking about how to deal with Daddy, blood-red words appeared in the air again.
[Congratulations, Probationary Citizen Mo Bai, for discovering a key clue.
All rules are now unlocked.
Rule 5: Daddy and Mommy don't get along.
Rule 6: Aside from having strong healing and stamina, and not dying even if his head gets smashed, Daddy isn't much different from an ordinary person.
Rule 7: Daddy cannot see well, but his sense of smell is sharp. Do not try to hide. It will only make him angrier.
Rule 8: No matter how you survive, as long as you stay alive, "Peach Blossom Land" awaits you.
]
Mo Bai quickly read through the new rules and rubbed her temples, which throbbed from overusing her ability.
They weren't hard to understand. Rule 5 meant she could exploit the conflict between Daddy and Mommy to make them fight each other while she benefited.
Rule 6 matched what Mommy's notes indicated. Daddy could be killed, but not through the head. His weak spot was his heart.
Rule 7 hinted at her survival method.
Mommy wanted to use Mo Bai as bait to distract Daddy and attack him in secret. If Mo Bai didn't come up with her own plan, she'd be the one killed.
But Rule 7 suggested another option. Since Daddy had poor eyesight, even if she couldn't hide, if she pretended to be dead, he might not notice whether she was truly dead or not.
Putting Rules 1 to 7 together, the game's strategy was pretty clear now.
She needs to play along with Mommy for two days, acting like the weak and obedient child she wanted. Then, when Daddy came home, Mommy would inevitably start a fight and make Daddy attack Mo Bai first.
After taking one hit, Mo Bai could collapse and play dead. With no other target, Daddy would turn to Mommy, and no matter who won, Mo Bai would have a chance to survive.
During that process, her ability could be crucial. For example, reinforce her clothes where she would be hit to reduce damage, or adjust her breathing and heartbeat while playing dead to make it more convincing.
As for Rule 8, it basically meant that even if she was barely alive, she would pass the stage as long as she lasted three days.
She still didn't know what Peach Blossom Land was, but since it was in quotation marks, it probably wasn't some paradise. It sounded more like the next test waiting for her after this death game.
She had her ability, a plan, and a hope of survival. But no Mommy anymore.
Sitting quietly in her wheelchair, Mo Bai reread the rules and the information on Mommy's phone over and over, trying to find any clue on how to kill Daddy.
There had to be a way. If she could kill Mommy, she could kill Daddy.
She still had two days to prepare. She could do this.
Facing imminent death, Mo Bai was surprisingly calm. Her mind went over every hint from the rules, every aspect of her ability, and every useful tool in the house. A plan slowly took shape.
She simulated it in her head several times and found it highly feasible.
The only problem was... could she still use her environment optimization ability again?
Her headache had lessened, which meant the ability was recovering, albeit very slowly.
She didn't know how long it would take to fully recover, or how many times she could use it.
That would decide whether her plan to save herself would succeed.
Mo Bai opened her phone, planning to check the System's notes on ability limitations again.
Just then, she noticed a new message from the mysterious System.
[Although Player Mo Bai has not yet cleared the beginner level, since she has awakened a supernatural ability and unlocked all the beginner rules, she has earned enough points to qualify as a formal citizen.
A personal AI assistant is now available. Would you like to activate it? Please reply.
"Yes/No"]
Of course she would!
Mo Bai immediately replied, "Yes."
After sending it, a progress bar appeared before her eyes:
[AI Assistant Downloading…]
The download speed was fast, and the progress bar was filled within 5 minutes.
Then, a cold, robotic voice echoed in her mind:
"Hello, Player. I am your AI Assistant. My main functions are to answer questions about points and rules, and to provide access to the Points Shop. Please give me a name."
Mo Bai casually said, "Let's call you Xiao Qi. I like that number." (T/N: 小七 - Little Seven)
"Understood. Xiao Qi is at your service. Would you like to change my voice? Here are a few audio options."
Before she died, Mo Bai loved watching videos of cute AI robots, so she picked a little girl's voice.
The mechanical tone shifted to a sweet, childlike voice. "Hello, Player! Do you have any questions?"
Mo Bai had too many questions!
She'd been thrown into this strange world without any explanation. Now that she finally had someone who could answer, she quickly asked.
"Why did I die and come back? What is this place? What happens after I pass the level? Do I go back to my original world? What is Peach Blossom Land? Is it the next stage? Can I ever return to my old world?"
Xiao Qi responded calmly, "Please relax, Player. Your heart rate is above 150. For your health, please calm down. I will answer your questions one at a time."
Mo Bai took a deep breath, and Xiao Qi continued, "Your questions are about the main world, Xiao Qi can answer them for you.
Player Mo Bai, you are a lucky individual chosen by the Infinite World after death. You've been granted the chance to live again within the Infinite World.
Once you clear this beginner level and survive for three days, you will be able to live in the Infinite World's beginner city, Peach Blossom Land."
Mo Bai asked, "So… I can't go back to my old world, right?"
"Correct," Xiao Qi replied. "What awaits you is a brand-new world and a brand-new life."
Mo Bai touched her chest. She didn't feel too sad. In her old world, she was already declared dead. Her family had long accepted her fate. Her parents had her younger sister by their side. They would grieve, but not forever.
She had said her goodbyes to that world and left without regrets.
"In this new world… can my legs recover?" she asked expectantly as she rested her hands on her thighs.
"Theoretically, yes," Xiao Qi replied. "It depends on your efforts and choices."
So, recovering her health was tied to passing these stages.
"What exactly is the Infinite World, and what does 'infinite' mean?"
"It means infinite worlds, infinite challenges, and infinite battles. As long as players keep clearing levels, they can gain infinite power and infinite life. Since you are still a probationary citizen and not yet qualified to live in the main world, that's all Xiao Qi can say for now." Xiao Qi explained.
That was already more than enough.
Mo Bai felt a spark of hope inside her. She wanted to clear this stage more than ever.
"Then can you tell me something about the beginner level?"
"Xiao Qi is only an assistant. I can only answer common questions, not help players pass levels. However, I can assure you that beginner levels are simple, personalized stages tailored to each player's unique traits. Most people pass them easily."
Mo Bai thought about everything she'd been through and frowned. "You're sure this is a simple stage?"
"Originally, yes. In the Infinite World, levels are ranked S, A, B, and C. Beginner levels are usually the easiest C-rank. However, since you awakened a supernatural ability early, your stage was upgraded from C to B-."
Mo Bai sighed. "Even with my ability, this doesn't feel simple at all."
"Normally, even if a level increases in difficulty, it adjusts to suit the player. If you had followed the instructions properly, you could have cleared it with your eyes closed."
Mo Bai: "…"
Right… she definitely didn't follow the rules properly.
"Moreover, since you killed a key NPC required to clear the level, the difficulty has increased again. It is now B+, almost A-rank. Based on data analysis, your chance of success is below 5%. Xiao Qi regrets that our time together will likely be short."
"I'm not dead yet, so don't mourn for me in advance. 5% still indicates hope."
"Understood. Xiao Qi will wait without high expectations."
Mo Bai rolled her eyes. "Can you at least have some faith in me? Don't write me off so fast! Fine. Maybe you can't help me clear it, but you can at least explain my ability, right? Like how long it takes to recover, how many times can I use it, that kind of thing."
"Player's mental energy bar has now been loaded. Players can check it themselves."
A loading screen appeared in her mind, and once it finished, she suddenly understood how to view her personal stats.
With a thought, a mental energy interface appeared before her. It showed her energy had recovered only 30%, with 48 hours remaining.
"Forty-eight hours? That's way too slow," she muttered.
"Recovery speed can be accelerated by replenishing energy. There are three ways:
Consume food for energy.
Use points to purchase nutrients in the Points Shop.
Find players with healing abilities."
She didn't know any other players, so the third option was out of the question. The System had rewarded her with 1,000 points after killing Mommy, so she could use those to buy nutrients.
"I want to check the Points Shop," she said.
"Okay."
A virtual shop interface filled with expensive items was projected in front of her.
She soon found a Basic Nutrient Serum, which could instantly restore stamina and mental energy, but its price was exactly 1,000 points.
Mo Bai looked at her balance and felt a pang of stinginess.
She had a feeling that points were crucial in this Infinite World, so she'd better save them.
Maybe she should just eat some food instead. She had plenty of rice and flour at home. Though not much in terms of side dishes, carbs could still fill her up.
"Will eating the food in this house help?" she asked.
"Any edible food in the stage world will work as long as it's non-toxic. Players can obtain it based on their ability and strength."
Hearing that, Mo Bai quickly went to the kitchen and cooked a big pot of rice.
Her long-term stomach issues were healed in this game. After fighting Mommy and using her power for the first time, she was starving. As a result, even without side dishes, she happily ate three big bowls of rice with pickles.
After the meal, she noticed that her energy recovery time had dropped to 24 hours.
Perhaps another meal would reduce it to 12?
Mo Bai rubbed her belly thoughtfully.
