It's been a while since I first introduced StarCafe memberships, and I'm excited to share that they've received a major upgrade alongside the new StarCafe website!

✨ Introducing the StarCafe Shard System

One of the biggest new features is Shards.

Shards are StarCafe's reward currency that can be used to redeem things like:

• Memberships

• Ad-free reading

• Novel Collections

• More rewards and features in the future

You can earn Shards in several ways:

• 🏅 Badge achievements (coming to the mobile app)

• 📱 In-app purchases (coming soon)

• ☕ Ko-fi support

• 💛 Patreon memberships (you may choose to receive membership benefits or convert your support into Shards)

The goal is to make supporting StarCafe much more flexible while giving readers more ways to enjoy the website.

The membership system has also been redesigned.

Instead of simply unlocking advance chapters, every membership now includes a combination of benefits for both fan translations and original novels.

Depending on your membership tier, you'll receive:

📖 Early Access

StarCafe continues to use its word count–based update system.

Every ongoing novel receives approximately 10,000 Chinese characters of public updates each week.

Rather than unlocking a fixed number of chapters, memberships receive a percentage of the available advance content. This keeps every tier fair regardless of chapter length.

📱 Mobile App

I'm also continuing development of the StarCafe mobile app.

Because of app store publishing restrictions, only original novels will be available inside the app.

Fan translations will remain available exclusively on the StarCafe website.

However, your StarCafe account, Shards, memberships, and rewards will work across both the website and the mobile app, giving you one shared account wherever you use StarCafe.

I know this is a pretty big change, and I sincerely appreciate everyone's patience while I transition everything over.

The new website gives me much more flexibility to add features, automate memberships, introduce Shards, and eventually connect everything with the mobile app. Most importantly, it lets me spend less time managing Patreon manually and more time actually translating.

I also understand that not everyone will want to make the switch to the StarCafe website, and that's completely okay. Everyone has their own preferences, and I truly appreciate the time and support you've already given me, whether you decide to continue with StarCafe or not.

After trying a different ad network for a while, I decided that AdSense provides a better overall experience for both readers and the website. I'll continue to keep the number and placement of ads as balanced as possible so they help cover StarCafe's operating costs without disrupting your reading experience.

I wanted to share a little update on StarCafe and explain why the website has received such a major upgrade recently.

Some of you may have noticed the new Shard System, which allows readers to redeem memberships, ad-free reading, novel collections, and more. This is a feature I've wanted to build for a long time, and I'm really happy that it's finally here.

To be honest, I know StarCafe has become much bigger than what most people would expect from a website run by a single person. The original plan was actually to build a mobile app as part of my software development portfolio, but after Patreon introduced several changes and I learned the copyright issue on the app publishing, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to completely upgrade the website as well.

One of the biggest reasons for this decision was the increasing platform costs of Patreon. Between service fees, currency conversion fees, and transfer fees, I realized that supporting StarCafe through a dedicated system, especially with future in-app purchases, would be almost the same price, or sometimes even cheaper, while allowing me to offer much more in return.

Another reason is all of you.

I genuinely can't thank my supporters enough. Knowing that there are people willing to support my translations gave me the confidence to invest more time and money into StarCafe. As the website grows, so do the hosting and maintenance costs, but thanks to your support, I no longer have to worry that every new cost comes directly out of my (almost empty 😭) wallet.

With this upgrade, I'm also able to provide far more perks than before. Besides memberships, readers can now earn or redeem Shards for rewards such as memberships, ad-free reading, novel collections, and other perks that I'll continue adding over time.

Please don't see these new features as me trying to squeeze more money out of readers. In fact, my goal is quite the opposite. It's to give back more value to those who choose to support StarCafe. Most of what I earn goes right back into keeping the website running, improving its features, paying for hosting, and covering the software and tools I use for translating and editing.

The website is now also fully automated, which makes things much easier for both readers and me. Patreon users no longer have to wait for me to manually update access every saturday, and I don't have to spend hours managing memberships behind the scenes. Everything syncs automatically, and you'll probably notice that every fan translation chapter now has an estimated release schedule. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep up with it! T^T

As for what's next, my priority is to continue building my translation stockpile so I can consistently provide the guaranteed minimum early-access content for Shard members. Once I've reached that goal, I'll return to working on the mobile app. The website upgrade ended up requiring much larger changes than I originally expected, so there are still quite a few things that need to be updated in the app as well.

I'm hoping to publish the Android version on the Google Play Store before the end of this month.

One important thing to note is that the mobile app will only contain original novels. Fan translations will continue to be available exclusively on the StarCafe website. However, any Shards you purchase through the mobile app can be used on both the app and the website, so your account and rewards will stay connected across both platforms.
