Chapter 96:
Seeking the Dao
*
As a web novel setting, the Primordial Mythos was an eclectic blend of ancient Huaxia mythology, classical fantasy tales, and various Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist conspiracy theories, which was exactly what made it so fascinating.
The setting gave mythological figures a pursuit beyond ordinary human concerns: the Great Dao. Yet at the same time, it imbued those divine beings with deeply human emotions.
They felt loneliness because life was scarce. They unleashed divine punishment when their dignity was challenged. They pursued their goals by any means necessary.
This uniquely Huaxian flavor of immortals and gods captivated countless readers back on Earth.
But in an interstellar setting, aliens first needed to understand what Dao meant.
When Xi Yujin demonstrated the Primordial Myth using gemstone particles in the museum, he intentionally avoided directly explaining the concept of Dao, instead allowing the observing Starship people to grasp the mysterious and ineffable meaning on their own.
He told the story of the dragons and phoenixes fighting over the final strand of Primordial Violet Qi, only to destroy each other in the process. Afterward, the myriad demons became the new protagonists of the primordial world.
Savage gods battled one another. Gonggong, in fury, smashed against Mount Buzhou, causing the heavens to crack in the northwest forevermore. Nuwa gathered stones to mend the sky, accidentally leaving behind a single spirit stone.
The Golden Crow obtained the Sun Flame and compared itself to the sun itself. Kuafu chased the sun, only to be toyed with by the Golden Crow and die in bitter hatred. Ten Golden Crows scorched the earth, and Houyi avenged humanity by drawing his bow and shooting down the suns.
Xi Yujin felt that the story was already fairly complete. He looked toward Wengla and asked whether this was enough to prove he was qualified to use the ancient glimmer particles.
"W-What Nuwa particles?" the interrupted Starship person asked blankly. "Who's mending the heavens?"
Xi Yujin helplessly repeated his request.
Only then did Wengla finally snap out of its daze. It summoned several temperature regulators to cool its face and said, "Mr. Wenhuo, the script you've written is indeed extraordinarily compelling. Even I became immersed in it without realizing. You absolutely qualify to use the ancient glimmer particles…"
It pulled several boxes of glimmer particles out from beneath the museum displays. Xi Yujin opened his mouth as if to say something, then stopped himself.
Using someone's ancient cremated remains, displayed in a museum no less, to make a TV drama really felt bizarre.
"This time, I plan to make it into a television series."
Holding the boxes of particles, Xi Yujin explained that television productions required far less precision than films, meaning they would consume fewer glimmer particles, which would also save the Starship people some resources. The Primordial Mythos was an expansive story anyway, better suited to a TV format that could convey it more completely.
Turning to Wengla, he asked, "I'll need many more actors. Is that acceptable too?"
The eyes of all the surrounding Starship people lit up instantly. They wanted to participate in the creation of this artwork!
Wengla smiled like a kindly elder. "Of course."
"I have another question," Xi Yujin said. "What do you think the Dao in my story represents?"
Wengla was clearly a highly respected elder within the starship belt. Its answer would influence the artistic direction of Primordial Myth.
"Dao… if translated correctly, should mean something like a road or a method," Wengla pondered. "The Primordial Violet Qi gave birth to all things. It is the original source, the far shore. Between this shore and that shore, there are many paths. Some beings fly through the skies, while others dive beneath the waters.
"Dao… is the road home."
"I agree with that interpretation," another Starship person chimed in. "Dao is something everyone seeks, yet also something dangerous. Going home feels the same way."
"I don't think so," said another Starship person, whose sense of smell was especially sharp. "The Dao in Primordial Myth carries hints of conspiracy. Where did those sages who successfully attained the Dao ultimately go? Did they, like Pangu, become mountains and rivers themselves? If so, then wouldn't that mean becoming nothing at all?
Dao is a cycle. Destruction and rebirth. It feels more like the universe itself. The universe is what prevents us from returning home. And the Great Dao in Primordial Myth doesn't allow just anyone to attain enlightenment either."
This time, Xi Yujin was the one left stunned.
But he had experienced enough strange things by now. The complicated emotions in his heart soon calmed, and he said:
"I know how to film it now…"
After finishing a day's work, Tula from the starship belt lay inside an egg-shaped massage pod, selecting entertainment for the evening. Seeing that Blue Planet's new release, Primordial Myth, had already accumulated reviews at a staggering pace, it felt inexplicably irritated.
Recently, Aila kept boasting in front of it about how fun the filming set was, how many ancient glimmer particles Primordial Myth had used, and how fulfilling it felt to participate in production. Tula absolutely refused to show weakness! If it admitted that it also wanted to watch, then it would lose!
"How can this Wenhuo produce so many works of art?" Tula couldn't understand it. "Other artists haven't even finished one new project yet, and he's already completed three."
Tula opened Global Romance Adventure, but failed to absorb a single word. One glance at the author, an alien! The artistic gap between aliens was even greater than the difference between a Starship infant and an elder.
In the end, its internal struggle failed. Yielding to its true desires, it clicked on Primordial Myth instead.
"This was filmed on a gas giant?"
Tula's eyes widened in shock. Artists in the starship belt usually only filmed on the moons orbiting gas giants. But they had never informed outsiders of that unwritten rule. It never imagined an alien would actually accomplish such a feat.
Everywhere between heaven and earth was gas. Living beings floated within it, impossible to distinguish head from tail. This was true nothingness.
Then the gases condensed into a dragon without legs.
The dragon coiled into itself, as though struggling to break free from some invisible restraint. Hongjun Patriarch, also born of Primordial Violet Qi, instructed Pangu through soundless words.
The dragon began to pulse like a beating heart.
Then it split heaven and earth apart.
Thunder and lightning roared through the process, with flames and hurricanes raging in every direction. Then the sun rose for the very first time, illuminating this newborn world of round heavens and flat earth.
Mount Buzhou, formed from Pangu's spine, upheld the world itself, while beyond the four corners stretched endless oceans.
Tula found itself growing dazed as it watched.
Aliens were unfamiliar with Huaxia mythology, but they were familiar with the birth of planets. In that instant, it suddenly understood and resonated with the ancient Huaxian people's simple reverence for the laws of nature.
Every Starship viewer watching Primordial Myth for the first time became deeply captivated by its mythological tales.
The people within the story resembled the Starship people in many ways, except they possessed flowing long hair and uniquely styled clothing. But the greatest difference was this:
Every one of them possessed the power to move mountains and fill seas.
They seemed like incarnations of nature itself, yet they pursued some vague, intangible ultimate destination, all while laughing, raging, grieving, and wandering freely across the primordial world. Their blend of determination and carefree freedom made the viewers feel as though they were witnessing an entirely new world.
"I like Nuwa. She feels like a mother."
"Kuafu never managed to catch the sun in the end… but the Golden Crow getting shot down afterward felt a little tragic too…"
"I love all the human characters that appeared! Humans are supposed to inherit the greatest potential for attaining the Dao, and so many people in the story are willing to die pursuing it. Humans are the weakest race in the setting, yet they stand on the same stage as the gods. I absolutely love that concept!"
Tula watched as King Zhou wrote vulgar poetry upon Nuwa's divine statue, enraging her and causing her to send down three demons to destroy the Shang Dynasty.
Heroes rose one after another, igniting the great War of the Gods!
Watching the breathtaking fantasy unfold on screen, Tula began trembling for no reason at all, nearly suffocating from emotion.
At last, it grasped the core idea behind the drama: this was humanity's oldest legend.
A mythology that began from the very birth of the world itself.
Too cool!
With trembling hands, Tula gave Wenhuo's work a five-star review.
"Wenhuo!" Soma came rushing over in a frenzy. "Primordial Myth has broken into the Top 20! You're incredible! Come look at the other reviews!"
Gano had gone off for a deep cleaning of his armor, leaving Xi Yujin temporarily alone. He leaned over to read the audience's comments. Most were highly positive, aside from a few people admitting they couldn't fully understand the story.
"Why does everyone keep mistaking me for Yujin?" Xi Yujin was thrilled that his work had been recognized, but he still deliberately put on an act in front of Soma. "It's really troublesome."
"That's because you're always together with that translator…" Soma mumbled around a mouthful of fruit. "Of course, everyone's going to think you're Yujin."
Xi Yujin fell silent for a long moment.
"I understand now. Then I admit it, Wenhuo is Yujin."
Soma straightened upright, its eyes bulging wide as though it had just heard a horror story. "That was a fast change of attitude!"
Xi Yujin replied, half boasting and half simply stating the truth: "Can't be helped. Everyone already knows Gano and I are a couple."
The fruit in Soma's hand instantly lost all flavor.
"Why do I suddenly feel like a dog being forcefully fed with dog food…" (T/N: In Chinese internet slang, displays of affection between a couple are "dog food" (狗粮), and the single people who witness them are the "dogs" being fed. )
Several Starship people entered the museum and said, "We've carefully studied Blue Planet's artworks and discovered that they possess extremely deep historical foundations. Wengla, have we reconstructed our own history yet?"
Wengla replied, "I am still organizing the relevant materials."
"We'll create works even greater than Blue Planet's!" one Starship person declared impatiently, eager to learn the history of their people.
Another Starship person asked in confusion, "Where exactly did we come from? Why did we move from the Little Starship to this vast starship belt? Who were our ancestors?"
"Searching for our origins is the most important task of my life," Wengla said gently.
"Do not worry. Even if we have forgotten the past, one day, our mother will hear our call and draw her wandering children back into her embrace.
Our homeland has always been hidden within our flesh and blood."
