The Alias Matryoshka

Once the idea popped into his head, it couldn't be suppressed.

Gano often saw novelists on forums mention that the romance of words itself was the highest form of romance.

Inside Tidal Peace, the dune flowers Gano had picked were carefully replanted by Xi Yujin using a rare mineral soil, then arranged throughout the cockpit, lounge, and bedroom. In that moment, Xi Yujin displayed an exceptional aesthetic sense, blending those flame-like blossoms harmoniously into every corner of the ship.

Gano wanted to... express a little more.

But he had never tried creating something entirely on his own. In the past, all he had known was how to fight. After coming aboard Tidal Peace, he learned translation, and letting words flow through his hands gradually awakened his capacity to think. Yet, writing was still a hundred times harder than killing. He only had vague, hazy emotions and no idea where to begin.

At that moment, Yujinno had gone off to teach the little Rust Clan members again.

Taking advantage of the moment, Gano opened Blue Planet novels on his optical computer.

He might not be able to create independently, but he could at least learn a thing or two from other novelists.

Although the Blue Planet novels he knew were all created by Yujinno's different personas...

Gano tried to find a model to follow.

Blue Planet novels portrayed many close friendships with genuine feeling, but Gano instinctively felt that those weren't what he was looking for. He wanted something more private, more uniquely his own.

After hesitating for a moment, he began searching for depictions of romantic partners in the Blue Planet novels.

"What exactly are partners like on Blue Planet?" Gano searched for answers with careful curiosity, and a trace of anticipation stirred within him.

Unfortunately, after quickly browsing through the full Blue Planet collection, he found that only the Xunming persona had written extensively about romantic relationships.

Now that Gano's emotional range had deepened, rereading those melodramatic stories hit him like a shock.

Cancer! Amnesia! Real and fake young masters! From universally despised to universally adored! The agonizing pain of clinging to love!

"...It shouldn't be like this."

Gano's pupils trembled. His thoughts became a tangled mess, and he simply shut off the optical computer.

"Other than the Xunming persona, Yujinno doesn't seem to have expressed any views on partners... I only know that it's a two-person arrangement."

For once, Gano felt the frustration of cross-species communication. Among the Zerg, all it took was strength. Once the genetic [breeding] rights were activated, you could simply tie someone up and lock them in a little black room without issue. If Gano had stayed with the Zerg, he would have learned about all of this at the next authorization cycle. Blue Planet, however, was maddeningly unclear on the subject.

His thoughts drifted further and further. One moment, he was imagining himself and Yujinno starring in a Blue Planet-style emotional drama; the next, he was imagining what it would be like to meet Yujinno in Zerg territory.

In the perfectly arrayed ranks, Yujinno would smile and call his name, and then thousands of "Ganos" would answer in unison, because the name had a very high duplication rate, and ordinary soldiers didn't have unique naming rights...

The image terrified Gano. Thankfully, he was aboard Tidal Peace.

He thought back to those warm early days, and remembered how Yujinno had taught him to write a diary. Maybe he could start his writing from that kind of thing.

Something similar in difficulty to a diary... would probably be writing a letter.

Tidal Peace sped through the vast emptiness of space, with not another lifeform in sight. A letter would have to travel light-years just to reach the ship's black box. And Xi Yujin had no idea that he was about to receive the shortest-distance letter imaginable.

In the library, he was still chatting with the little Rust Clan members, "Try testing whether this kind of glass dome corrodes easily. I want to ensure the safety of the plants aboard the ship..."

Tidal Peace arrived at a young star system and absorbed ample energy.

At that moment, an alien being was eating crispy noodles.

It was idly browsing the AI Forum for new books. The novels there were of high quality, and it could always find something to its taste. But after finishing its favorite literary brand, it fell into an inexplicable emptiness.

"I've already read everything I liked. This literary brand seems to be moving on... I don't really have a reason to stay on the forum anymore." It tried sampling new works, but after a few lines, none of them felt right.

"There are plenty of novels on the forum, but only a few suit my taste. I don't want to develop new preferences either. Reading here is expensive, and what if it turns out to be no good?" the alien reader sighed. "Why isn't there a genre I can just dive into without thinking, something both varied and always fresh?"

It had once found such a literary brand: Blue Planet literature. But one of its novelists had stopped updating due to illness, and the others had gone quiet for a while as well. That disappointment had lingered for a long time.

There were now new novelists on the forum paying tribute to Blue Planet literature, but they just weren't the same. That combination of a fresh reading perspective, genuine literary impact, and historical depth was irreplaceable.

In Blue Planet slang, Blue Planet literature was its white moonlight.

"When will Blue Planet novelists write new works? Where will they update next? But waiting for other platforms to license things takes forever... Maybe I should start another voyage."

The reader had already begun checking prices for planetary vessels.

Suddenly, a friend called through a private channel: "Quick! Blue Planet's official site has announced a writing contest!"

The alien reader immediately saw it reposted across the forum. At last, Blue Planet's official site had a new activity with a brand-new announcement! A writing competition was about to begin!

This had to be a major event. It was posted directly on the official site, and the mysterious novelist Yujin was serving as the final judge. The prestige was obvious.

"The Fisherman Cup?" The alien reader's eyes lit up as they read through the requirements.

"A lone boat, an old man at his writing, fishing alone in the cold, snowy river. This year's Fisherman Cup introduces era-based categories and will, for the first time, accept submissions from extraterrestrial civilizations. Participating novelists must adopt new pen names, conceal their IP origins, and undergo a fair selection process..."

"New pen names?" the alien reader noted the detail. "That's probably to prevent popularity from influencing votes... Blue Planet competitions really do care about fairness."

Other readers were already discussing it enthusiastically.

They didn't need to know all the fine details. At the end of the day, they just needed to read. Surely, Blue Planet novelists would participate in a Blue Planet writing contest.

"Blue Planet novelists have such distinctive styles. I'll recognize them at a glance."

"Guessing pen names is half the fun! Luckily I only follow Fuling. Her style is the easiest to identify."

"But what if a novelist suddenly goes rogue and adopts a completely different style?"

"...No way."

Meanwhile, many novelists who had long studied Blue Planet civilization were eager to try, and the rule about new pen names only heightened their enthusiasm.

"I can write something that even readers won't be able to distinguish from true Blue Planet literature! I'll prove with my words that I'm a real spiritual citizen of Blue Planet!"

"Ha. I already know Blue Planet inside out. Readers won't spot a single flaw."

Several brands that had previously exchanged work with Blue Planet held serious meetings.

"This is our chance to prove ourselves. Only if our work earns the acknowledgment of Blue Planet readers can our literary exchange be said to have truly have value. Our connection with Blue Planet shouldn't stop at that one moment on the forum. It should shine even more brilliantly in the future."

They looked at their companions and encouraged each other: "Let's study the specific rules carefully, then start with some short pieces for practice!"

The news of the Blue Planet Fisherman Cup spread like a stone thrown into still water.

Meanwhile, Xi Yujin was still thinking about how to make the competition more interesting.

Requiring new pen names wasn't only about fairness. It was also about expanding what his aliases could do, showing alien beings that every well-known Blue Planet novelist had more than one string to their bow. Those who couldn't write in multiple styles were simply staying home, which was why aliens had never encountered them.

Even if the Intelligent Machines stopped exposing his aliases, he still needed full preparation for future crises.

"And the fun of pen names is that when the truth comes out, readers let out a gasp and say, 'You wrote all of this?!' Let the alien beings experience the joy of layered aliases!"

When they uncovered the first layer of the alias, they would be satisfied and never suspect there was another layer beneath it.

So the Fisherman Cup's true name was: The Alias Matryoshka Plan.

Xi Yujin now had six asteroid Typing Machines. Excluding himself as the referee under the Yujin alias, he had eight other aliases in total. Since Canghai and Qiongtian would sit this round out, that left six aliases, each paired with one Typing Machine.

He listed six new pen names, along with six underlying aliases to be revealed in layers: from the freelance novelists, Xunming, Yongye, and Feiniao; from the official novelists, Jung, Mingxing, and Fuling.

Time to start layering the disguises.

He decided to make the first layer easy, something readers could guess at a glance.

"The most distinctive style... is obviously Yongye."

Yongye was practically synonymous with the word "detective." If he wrote another detective story, alien readers would immediately draw the connection.

He already had the new pen name picked out: "Polar Day," the direct opposite of "Eternal Night," (Yongye) which practically handed readers the answer.

Xi Yujin leisurely browsed the AI Forum to gauge readers' impressions of Yongye, so he could reinforce them.

Ten minutes later, the most recent post that appeared read: "Today I still hope Xunming and Yongye make up. I really can't bear to watch another tragedy of misunderstanding driving two people apart."

"Since when did those two have a bad relationship?" Xi Yujin reread the rumors circulating about these two aliases and fell into thought.

He usually paid no attention to readers' speculation, but from a novelist's perspective, the Xunming-and-Yongye script was starting to resemble the Canghai-and-Qiongtian one. He couldn't just reheat old material. Only a novelist who had run out of ideas would rely on the same formula forever. A responsible novelist had to be willing to innovate.

In short, his contrarian streak kicked in. He was going to correct the public's misunderstanding about these two aliases. Yongye and Xunming... actually had an excellent relationship! The readers were all getting it wrong!

"In that case, the pen name 'Polar Day' goes to Xunming," Xi Yujin decided, carefully scripting his aliases. "If they're on good terms, having similar pen names makes perfect sense. As for the content, letting Xunming write a lighter detective story would work well. Everyone always praises him for his versatility across genres anyway."

And so, Xunming's IP was reregistered under the new pen name Polar Day, with his first submission to the Fisherman Cup: Superpower Detective Academy.

The story follows a nationally renowned detective academy that has opened its doors to new students. Every graduate goes on to become a famous detective in society, and each student possesses extraordinary abilities beyond the reach of ordinary people. The protagonist, determined to uncover the truth behind a childhood murder case, decides to apply. His ability: hyperthymesia, the condition of being unable to forget any detail...

Due to the network delay between the Tidal Peace and other locations, it would be a while before readers' reactions came in. Xi Yujin mused that the number of readers who guessed Polar Day's true identity had probably dropped significantly, but that made it even more interesting.

He switched to the next alias's profile page.

"All right, this pen name is yours!"

Using Yongye's IP, he registered a brand-new name.

"Wild Tyrannosaurus Rex!"
