Chapter 114:
Disease Town (42)
*
After riding the carousel, the Phantom Butterfly and Pang Mian ran off to play Couple Photo Booth. Standing in separate photo booths, they only had to take pictures in matching poses to earn 50 Love Value.
Mo Bai stood with her arms crossed, watching the two of them having the time of their lives.
Pang Mian seemed to have completely lost his mind. He appeared to have been corrupted by the amusement park already, with only one thought in his head: increasing his Love Value together with the Phantom Butterfly.
After finishing the photo booth game, Pang Mian wanted to drag the Phantom Butterfly off to play Love Match-Up, but the Phantom Butterfly ran over to Mo Bai instead.
Naturally, it brushed a strand of hair behind its ear, its cheeks slightly flushed, and smiled at Mo Bai.
"Come play with us."
Mo Bai could not help saying, "You should understand my preferences. Are you sure using Ye Yatong's face can earn any Love Value from me?"
The Phantom Butterfly replied, "Would using a man's face earn any Love Value from you?"
"No," Mo Bai answered bluntly.
"Exactly," said the Phantom Butterfly. "Whether I appear as a man or a woman, I can't obtain Love Value from you anyway. So I might as well become a beautiful woman and earn Love Value from Pang Mian.
"You won't generate Love Value for me, but this face will make you feel softer emotions. That's still better than using Lin Xiafei's appearance."
When it came to manipulating emotions, the Phantom Butterfly was truly clever.
After learning that the Phantom Butterfly had helped the Six Paths players deceive Gu Tiandong and lure him away, Mo Bai developed genuine killing intent toward it.
She had already decided to eliminate the Phantom Butterfly within this instance.
Logically, she should not have been able to treat it calmly anymore. Yet whenever she saw it wearing Ye Yatong's face, something inside her softened.
Even if she eventually killed the Phantom Butterfly, Mo Bai hoped it would die wearing a different face, not Ye Yatong's.
"You really believe he's been corrupted by this instance?" Mo Bai glanced at Pang Mian and spoke to the Phantom Butterfly.
To Mo Bai, both Pang Mian and the Phantom Butterfly were enemies.
She had no objection to driving a wedge between them.
The Phantom Butterfly blinked slyly.
"Don't forget, I can sense emotions and read memories related to love. He really has fallen in love with me."
Really?
This was a player carefully selected by Six Paths to enter an Ultra-Star Rank instance. Did he truly have no resistance against the Love Amusement Park?
"You don't believe the amusement park can corrupt players?" The Phantom Butterfly took Mo Bai's hand. "Come. I'll show you something."
Mo Bai followed it, and Pang Mian came trotting after them like an eager puppy.
They passed a series of absurd attractions such as Love Song Duets, Romantic Rocking Cars, and Love Balloons, eventually arriving at the Cliffside Love Roller Coaster attraction.
The area was staffed by a host and several attendants.
The distance between the two cliffs was exactly 210 meters, a number that sounded like I love you in Chinese.
Yet below the cliffs was not the rocky abyss Mo Bai had expected.
Instead, there was a massive black vortex.
In truth, these were not cliffs at all. They were simply two enormous stone platforms suspended on either side of a bottomless whirlpool.
On the platform across from them stood a giant stone monument carved with three large characters: Lovers' Cliff.
"What is that black vortex?" Mo Bai asked.
"Whispers of Betrayal," the Phantom Butterfly replied.
"If someone falls into it, they are submerged in countless resentments born from people who died after being betrayed by their lovers.
They'll hear endless whispers, and every whisper becomes an invisible arm that drags them deeper and deeper until they become part of the vortex themselves."
"That's more difficult than I expected," Mo Bai said.
The Phantom Butterfly smiled.
"Of course. Did you think people could simply climb back out after falling?"
At that moment, the host announced: "Ladies and gentlemen! A couple whose love is stronger than gold is about to challenge our amusement park's Three Trials of Love!
Let's give them a round of applause!
We wish them success in clearing all three stages and taking a commemorative photograph in front of the Lovers' Cliff monument!"
Mo Bai looked in the direction the host indicated.
She saw Qiu Xuerong standing beside a handsome man with an exceptionally warm and approachable appearance.
Mo Bai: "..."
Pang Mian seemed to regain a little of his sanity and asked, "Is that Qiu Xuerong?"
"Yes," said the Phantom Butterfly.
"And who is the man challenging the stages with her?" Mo Bai asked.
The Phantom Butterfly replied, "The amusement park custom-made him for her. He is the lover hidden deep within her soul."
"You used your mimicry ability to transform an instance creature into the appearance of Qiu Xuerong's lover?" Mo Bai asked.
"Yes," said the Phantom Butterfly.
Mo Bai was beginning to understand how the Love Amusement Park and Butterfly Cottage had fused together.
They complemented each other perfectly, compensating for each other's weaknesses.
Butterfly Cottage possessed only a handful of abilities: mimicry, emotional perception, and the ability to read memories connected to love.
Aside from its Scale Poison, it lacked powerful offensive capabilities, and even the Scale Poison was relatively easy to counter, since a strong gust of wind could scatter the scales.
The Love Amusement Park, on the other hand, possessed locations, traps, and lethal attractions.
But it lacked the ability to make someone truly fall in love and lose themselves.
When visitors entered the amusement park, it could provide handsome men and beautiful women, but it could not recreate the one unforgettable person hidden in a visitor's heart.
The Phantom Butterfly filled that gap.
It allowed the amusement park to recreate memories of love, tailor a unique lover for every individual, and provide the kind of mental corruption that only an S-rank monster could create.
Meanwhile, the Love Amusement Park completely upgraded and transformed the Phantom Butterfly in return.
Furthermore, because Disease Town's rules prohibited the use of fire, the Phantom Butterfly had even substituted its Scale Poison for the death mechanic originally used in the Explosive Love Ferris Wheel.
The instance was practically perfect.
Mo Bai stood close enough to Qiu Xuerong to call out to her.
"Qiu Xuerong! What are you doing?"
Under normal circumstances, Qiu Xuerong should have been able to hear her.
Yet just as Mo Bai shouted, Qiu Xuerong's lover whispered something into her ear.
Qiu Xuerong smiled, and a touch of warmth appeared on her snow-like features.
She didn't hear Mo Bai at all.
"Why?" Mo Bai asked.
"The whispers of a lover block out all outside sounds," the Phantom Butterfly explained.
"Once visitors enter the Love Amusement Park, the only thing they can see is their lover, and the only voice they can hear is their lover's."
No wonder the Phantom Butterfly could openly discuss anything in front of Pang Mian.
Once visitors were corrupted by the amusement park, they became consumed by romantic obsession and lost the ability to communicate normally.
Frowning, Mo Bai watched as Qiu Xuerong and her lover entered Love Values into each other's racing cars.
Only the person entering the value could see the number.
The driver could not.
Then the two of them sat down in the driver's seats. Several mechanical arms extended from the vehicles, firmly restraining them and locking them into place.
"Violence is not allowed here," the host announced. "You may not use force to damage the cars.
"And don't worry about not knowing how to drive. Our vehicles are fully automated."
The Phantom Butterfly looked at Mo Bai and said, "This isn't a game where you can clear it simply by having enough Love Value.
Here, visitors can only place their trust in their lovers. Mo Bai, are you willing to trust me?"
"I trust you," Mo Bai replied sincerely.
She trusted that the Phantom Butterfly would try to get her killed in one of these games.
But there was no way for her to kill the Phantom Butterfly in return.
Even if she deliberately entered too little Love Value, Pang Mian would make up the difference for the Phantom Butterfly.
Pang Mian's presence put Mo Bai in a very passive position.
Looking at Qiu Xuerong, who was already completely consumed by romance, Mo Bai felt a trace of tension.
If Qiu Xuerong's lover wanted her dead, Mo Bai had no idea how she could save her.
"Do you intend for her to live or die?" Mo Bai asked.
"That's not for me to decide," the Phantom Butterfly replied. "That depends on her love and trust for her lover."
It pointed toward a sign nearby.
Mo Bai walked over and found another set of rules.
These were not for visitors.
It was titled Love Amusement Park Employee Rules.
Rule One: All amusement park employees must provide visitors with the highest-quality romantic experience. Any employee assigned the role of a lover may not violate these rules, including the park director.
Rule Two: As long as a visitor wholeheartedly loves their lover, the lover must love that visitor in return exactly as the visitor desires. The lover's actions are entirely determined by the visitor's feelings.
Rule Three: The more a visitor trusts their lover, the more the lover will love the visitor and the more determined they will be to protect the visitor's life.
Rule Four: If a visitor does not trust their lover, then the lover cannot protect the visitor.
Rule Five: If a lover genuinely and sincerely loves a visitor from the bottom of their heart, Rule Four becomes invalid.
Mo Bai frowned as she read the employee rules.
This was another terrifying trap.
If visitors trusted the lover provided by the amusement park and were willing to place their lives in that person's hands, then the lover would enter enough Love Value to keep them alive.
But any visitor capable of that level of trust would already be deeply obsessed with love, thoroughly corrupted by the amusement park, and completely incapable of leaving it.
If visitors did not trust their lover's devotion, then the lover would certainly enter a Love Value amount that would cause their death, unless the lover genuinely loved them.
The employee rules were posted openly at the entrance to the Three Deadly Trials.
Nothing was hidden, so it was an open scheme.
Trust, and be corrupted into a hopeless romantic.
Distrust, and die.
And surviving despite distrusting your lover might be even worse.
Any visitor who reads these rules would inevitably realize:
So my lover broke through the rules because they truly loved me.
Which would only deepen the corruption.
Clearly, the amusement park's primary objective was not to kill visitors but to corrupt them. To make them willingly leave their souls behind within the park.
The Phantom Butterfly gazed at Mo Bai with deep affection.
"Mo Bai, even if you don't trust me, I'll still protect you, because I love you that much."
Expressionless, Mo Bai turned toward Pang Mian.
"Aren't you going to do something about it?"
Pang Mian clutched his chest and revealed a pained expression.
"To love her is to give her freedom. My loving her is my own business. I can't use my love to restrain her. She doesn't love me, but that's fine as long as I love her."
Mo Bai: "..."
Love-brains are truly terrifying.
At that moment, Qiu Xuerong's car and her lover's car launched from opposite sides of the cliff.
They soared over the abyss toward the platform on the far side.
The two vehicles raced through the air.
Halfway across, Qiu Xuerong's lover suddenly plunged downward and fell into the black vortex.
Meanwhile, Qiu Xuerong's own car also lost power and dropped when it was still about ten meters away from the platform.
Mo Bai's heart nearly leapt into her throat.
Then Qiu Xuerong's vine-like hair shot outward, wrapping tightly around the Lovers' Cliff monument.
The vines were astonishingly strong.
They pulled both Qiu Xuerong and the entire vehicle across the gap and safely onto the platform.
...
What a bizarre lovers' suicide game.
Neither side trusted the other, and both clearly wanted the other dead.
Mo Bai turned to one of the staff members.
"That's allowed?"
The staff member nodded.
"She didn't use violence, so she didn't violate the rules. Our amusement park does not discriminate against visitors whose arms happen to be over ten meters long."
Meanwhile, the host announced: "Unfortunately, Miss Qiu Xuerong and her third lover have failed the Lovers' Cliff challenge. Miss Qiu, do you have anything you'd like to say?"
Qiu Xuerong replied coldly, "Please issue me a fourth lover. I'm really enjoying the feeling of personally killing my lovers."
The host responded immediately: "This way, Miss Qiu. We'll provide you with another identical lover at once."
Mo Bai called out to Qiu Xuerong again, but the other still did not hear her.
She simply followed the staff member away to collect a new lover.
Mo Bai: "..."
Looking at Qiu Xuerong, it was impossible to tell whether she had been corrupted or not.
Even if she had been corrupted, she did not seem interested in romance at all. She only seemed interested in experiencing the thrill of personally killing her lovers.
It looked as though she had discovered an entirely new method of farming monsters.
Actually, every sub-instance in the Disease Town is related to disease.
The Mind Room is about schizophrenia,
The Abandoned hospital is about amnesia,
The Dream Realm is about endless dream,
The Plague Garden is about disease and curses,
And the Love Amusement Park is about love-struck brains.
I didn't go off-topic (I'm sure of it)
